Algeria Tours from Australia: Flights, Visa & Planning (2026)
September 2026 · 6 min read
Australians need a visa for Algeria, arranged at an Algerian consulate with an invitation letter from a licensed operator ($25, with a programme of at least 3 days including airport transfers), or — for organised trips that include the Sahara — issued on arrival at Algiers airport with our $45 authorisation. There are no direct flights, so plan on one or two connections into Algiers (ALG) — usually through Doha, Dubai or Istanbul. Our private tours suited to travellers from Australia run from €920 to €1,850 per person.
After a journey that long, two weeks is the right length — enough to see the Roman north, the Casbah and the deep Sahara without rushing any of it.
This page gathers what matters when you are travelling from Australia: getting there, the visa, time and money, when to go, and which of our private tours fit best. Every tour is private, on your own dates, with a licensed local guide. All our guides speak English.
Getting there
There are no direct flights, so plan on one or two connections into Algiers (ALG) — usually through Doha, Dubai or Istanbul. From Sydney or Melbourne the journey is typically 22 to 28 hours; many travellers break it with a stopover. Check current schedules when you book.
The visa
Visitors from Australia need a visa for Algeria. There are two routes:
- A tourist visa from the Algerian embassy or consulate that serves you, applied for before you travel. Consulates want an invitation letter and a confirmed programme from a licensed Algerian operator — we prepare both with any programme of at least 3 days that includes airport pickup and drop-off (the invitation letter is $25).
- The Saharan visa-authorisation, for organised trips that include the Sahara, such as Djanet or Timimoun — whichever airport you fly into. We issue the authorisation ($45) and the visa sticker is issued on arrival at Algiers airport; the arrival stamp is a separate fee paid at the airport.
Send us your nationality and travel dates and we will tell you which route applies. The details are on our entry and e-Visa page and in our visa guide.
Time, power and money
- Time: Algeria runs on UTC+1 all year, with no daylight saving. Sydney and Melbourne are 9 hours ahead of Algiers in the Australian winter and 10 hours ahead during Australian daylight saving; Perth is 7 hours ahead all year.
- Power: Algeria uses 230 V power — the same voltage as Australia — but European Type C and F plugs, so an adapter is all you need.
- Money: Our tour prices are in euros, and you pay us before the trip. On the ground Algeria runs on cash: bring euros (or US dollars) in clean notes to change — Australian dollars are hard to change. Cards are rarely accepted outside big hotels — see can I use credit cards in Algeria?
When to go
Here the calendar works in your favour: the Sahara is travelled from October to April, which is exactly the Australian summer holiday season. Christmas and New Year in the desert are among the best weeks of the year — see our winter guide.
