Tadrart Rouge — 7 Days in the Red Sahara

Overview

This is the classic Djanet circuit, run at the pace the landscape deserves. Seven days, six of them ending at a bivouac you help pitch, crossing the Tadrart Rouge from Tigharghart to the great dunes of Tin Merzouga and back through the natural arches of Ajelati. Your guide and drivers are Tuareg from Djanet; the cook travels with you; and the whole southern leg — the flight from Algiers, the airport transfers, the park permits — is arranged before you land. What you bring is a duffel bag and a willingness to sleep on sand.

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day 1 Djanet → Tigharghart

   Land at Djanet after the flight from Algiers and meet the team that will be with you all week. Straight out by 4×4 to Tigharghart, where the first bivouac goes up and dinner is cooked over the fire. First night under tent or, if you prefer, simply under the sky.

   • Djanet — The Tuareg oasis capital of the south-east and the gateway to the Tassili n’Ajjer.
   • Tigharghart — The first camp, at the edge of the rock-art country you will return to on the last morning.
2. Day 2 Tigharghart → El Berdj

   Breakfast at camp, then a crossing into the gorges of El Berdj — deep-cut walls of sandstone with engravings and paintings along them. Picnic lunch in the shade, camp pitched at El Berdj, and sunset from the dunes above it.

   • El Berdj — Impressive gorges whose walls carry both engravings and painted panels.
3. Day 3 El Berdj → Moul Naga

   A day of landscapes that alternate between sand and rock, stopping at several notable rock-art sites along the way. Picnic lunch, then on to Moul Naga, where camp is set among majestic dunes and dinner is eaten under the stars.

   • Moul Naga — A bivouac pitched in the middle of the dunes.
4. Day 4 Moul Naga → Erg Tin Merzouga

   Walking in the rose-coloured dunes and the emblematic scenery of the Tadrart Rouge, then arrival at Erg Tin Merzouga — the great sand sea. Climb the high dunes for a sunset that is the reason many people come, and camp at their foot.

   • Erg Tin Merzouga — The great dune field of the Tadrart, and its most famous sunset.
5. Day 5 Tin Merzouga → Tissetka → Ouanahar

   Down to the Oued In Djaren and on to Tin Abadène, whose engravings show giraffes and elephants — animals from a Sahara that was green. Picnic lunch, then the road to Ouanahar and the evening camp.

   • Tin Abadène — Engraved giraffes and elephants, from the era when this desert held rivers.
   • Ouanahar — The night’s camp, deeper into the Tadrart.
6. Day 6 Ouanahar → Ajelati → Oued In Djaren

   A morning among monumental natural arches, then the Tamezguida "cathedral" — a sandstone formation that earns the name. A walk in the Oued In Djaren, picnic lunch, and camp at Ajelati for sunset over the black dunes.

   • Tamezguida — The sandstone "cathedral" of the Tadrart.
   • Ajelati — Black dunes, and the last night in the desert.
7. Day 7 Ajelati → Tigharghart → Djanet → home

   Back to Tigharghart for the two engravings everyone comes to see: the "Crying Cow" and the Elephant Rock. Return to Djanet, then the transfer to the airport for the flight north.
