Why visit Timimoun

Timimoun, the Red Oasis, is one of the most atmospheric corners of the Algerian Sahara. Capital of the Gourara, it glows with the ochre-red of its Sudanese-style architecture, set against endless palm groves, fortified ksour and a shimmering salt lake. It is a place of deep traditions — water shared by ancient channels, and a collective song found nowhere else.

A short history

The Gourara was settled around its oases for centuries, its life made possible by the foggara — underground channels that bring water for miles by gravity to the date gardens. Its towns grew as trading and religious centres on the desert routes, their architecture built in red mud in a style linked to the Sudanic world to the south. Timimoun became the region’s capital and, in 2019, the seat of a new Algerian state.

What to see

The town’s famous red ramparts and arcades; the surrounding ksour of the Gourara, such as Charouine and Ouled Saïd; the vast palm groves and the visible workings of the foggara; the great sebkha (salt lake); and the dunes beyond. Evenings may bring performances of the Ahellil.

Culture

The Gourara keeps a distinctive culture, blending Amazigh (Zenati), Arab and Saharan influences. Its signature is the Ahellil, a hypnotic collective song of voice, flute and clapping, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage — performed at festivals and religious gatherings.

Food

Oasis cooking built around dates and the produce of the palm gardens, with hearty desert dishes and bread, and the ever-present mint tea.

How to visit
