Overview
Djanet is a palm-fringed oasis in Algeria’s far south-east and the launch point for the country’s greatest desert journeys. It sits at the edge of the Tassili n’Ajjer and within reach of the Tadrart Rouge.
Tassili n’Ajjer
This sandstone plateau holds an estimated 15,000 prehistoric engravings and paintings — a UNESCO World Heritage Site recording a green Sahara of cattle, giraffes and people thousands of years ago.
Tadrart Rouge
South of Djanet, the Tadrart is a 4x4 expedition through blood-red dunes, natural arches and canyons, with nights in desert camps under exceptionally dark skies.
Practical
Travel here is seasonal (November–February is ideal), uses licensed guides, and requires permits for deep-desert areas — normally arranged as part of an organised trip.
