Algerian Sahara Travel Guide: Djanet, Timimoun and the Tadrart
May 2026 · 8 min read
The Algerian Sahara is the largest desert area of any country, covering over 80% of Algeria. Highlights include the Tassili n'Ajjer plateau (UNESCO, ~15,000 prehistoric rock paintings), the red Tadrart dunes near Djanet, and the red oasis of Timimoun.
The Sahara is not one place. In Algeria it shifts from the black peaks of the Hoggar to the galleries of the Tassili to the red dunes of the Tadrart. What unites them is scale, silence, and the near-total absence of other tourists.
Tassili n’Ajjer
A sandstone plateau near Djanet holding ~15,000 engravings and paintings, some 12,000 years old — a UNESCO site since 1982.
The Tadrart Rouge
A 4x4 expedition through canyons, arches and dunes that glow red at sunset, with nights in desert camps under a sky with no light pollution.
Timimoun
In the west, the gateway to the Gourara — oases, red-earth ksour and the ancient foggara irrigation channels.
What to pack
- Warm layers for cold nights
- A scarf for sun and sand
- Head torch, power bank, cash
