Ihrir & the Tassili — 7 Days of Oases and Ergs

Overview

If the Tadrart is the Sahara of sand, Ihrir is the Sahara of water. This circuit works the northern side of the Tassili n’Ajjer: an enclosed oasis whose gueltas hold water year-round, a canyon you can swim in when the season allows, wind-sculpted rock towers at Tikoubaouine, and the high dunes of Erg Admer for sunset. Six nights out under canvas, one in a guesthouse in Djanet on arrival, and the flight south from Algiers included in the price. It is the quieter of our two seven-day Djanet circuits, and the one people are most surprised by.

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day 1 Arrival in Djanet

   Land at Djanet, the gateway to the Tassili n’Ajjer, and be met by our team. Transfer to the guesthouse, time to rest after the flight, and a convivial dinner before the circuit begins.

   • Djanet — Tuareg oasis capital of the south-east — palm groves beneath red cliffs.

   An arrival day, deliberately unhurried.

2. Day 2 Djanet → Ihrir → Idaren → Tasourt

   Breakfast, then out by 4×4 to the valley of Ihrir — an enclosed oasis famous for its natural gueltas and its unexpectedly luxuriant vegetation. On to Idaren and Tasourt to explore rock engravings and more natural pools. Camp goes up, dinner is cooked on the fire, and you sleep under tent or under the stars.

3. Day 3 Ihrir → Tilalin → Erg Admer

   Breakfast at camp and a walk through the Tilalin area, then the road to Erg Admer. Climb the dunes for sunset over the erg, and camp in the middle of the desert.

   • Erg Admer — A great dune field — the climb up for sunset is the day’s reward.
4. Day 4 Erg Admer → Oued Essendilène → Tikoubaouine

   Off to Oued Essendilène and a walk through its canyon, where swimming is possible depending on the season. Picnic lunch, then on to Tikoubaouine and its rock formations sculpted by the wind. Camp among the rocks.

   • Oued Essendilène — A canyon with permanent water — swimming in season.
   • Tikoubaouine — Towers and arches carved by wind rather than water.
5. Day 5 In Imouroudene → Adaik

   Exploration of the In Imouroudene plateau, a panoramic walk and a picnic lunch. On to Adaik — known locally as the "little Sefar" for its concentration of rock art — with free time to take in the sunset before dinner at the bivouac.

   • In Imouroudene — A plateau with long views over the Tassili.
   • Adaik — The "little Sefar" — rock art without the plateau trek.
6. Day 6 Adaik → Timghas

   Breakfast and the drive to Timghas, with an exploration walk and time spent on the Saharan flora that survives out here. Picnic lunch, camp pitched, and a last dinner under the stars.

   • Timghas — The final camp, and a closer look at what actually grows in the Sahara.
7. Day 7 Timghas → Tigharghart → Djanet → home

   Back towards Tigharghart for the "Crying Cow" engraving and the Elephant Rock, then return to Djanet and the transfer to the airport for the flight home.

   A departure day: the timing follows the return flight.
