Yes, it snows in Algeria
Every winter, the Atlas ranges hold real snow:
- Chréa, in the cedar forests above Blida — roughly an hour from Algiers, with a small ski station.
- Tikjda, in the Djurdjura mountains of Kabylie — mountain walking, snow and another modest ski station.
- The Aurès, above Batna — snowy peaks near the Roman city of Timgad.
The high plateaus around Sétif and Batna are also properly cold in winter, with occasional snow in the towns themselves.
These are modest facilities, not alpine resorts — but the snow, the cedars and the emptiness are real.

How to build the snow-to-Sahara week
The contrast only works December to February, when the mountain snow and the prime Saharan season overlap.
- Algiers (2 nights) — coast, the Casbah, mild sea air.
- Chréa (day trip or 1 night) — cedar forest and snow, about an hour inland.
- Fly south to Djanet or Tamanrasset (3–4 nights) — guided 4x4, dunes, rock art, camps under an exceptional winter sky.
- Optional: the Roman east (Timgad, Djémila) on cold, clear plateau days.

Packing for two climates at once
This is the part people get wrong. In the same bag you need:
- Mountain-cold layers — proper warm clothing, waterproof outer, decent shoes.
- Desert kit — strong sun protection by day, and warm layers again for freezing desert nights.

- Spring — the snow has largely gone; lovely for the north, no contrast.
- Summer — the deep desert is dangerously hot and effectively off-limits.
So this is a winter-only trip — which pairs neatly with Christmas and New Year, when the desert is at its best anyway.
