How many days do you need in Algeria?

Quick answer

Seven days covers Algiers, the Roman coast and one more region properly. Ten days lets you add the M'Zab Valley or the Roman east without rushing. Two weeks is what you need to combine the north with a real Sahara expedition, because the desert alone absorbs four to five days.

The honest constraint in Algeria is not what there is to see, it is distance. This is the largest country in Africa, the Sahara fills four-fifths of it, and the gap between the Mediterranean and Djanet is a continental journey rather than a drive. Almost every disappointing Algeria itinerary is one that tried to cover too much ground.

Seven days works well and is the most common length. It gives you Algiers and the Casbah properly, the Roman coast at Tipaza and Cherchell, and one further region — the Roman east around Djémila and Timgad, or the Kabylie coast at Béjaïa.

Ten days removes the compression. You can add the M’Zab Valley at Ghardaïa, or run the eastern arc through Constantine and the Roman cities without spending your evenings recovering from the road.

Fourteen days is the length at which the country opens up, because it is the first point at which the north and a genuine Sahara leg both fit. Budget four to five days for the desert on its own: a flight south, then guided 4x4 travel and nights in camp. Trying to compress that into two days means you spend both of them in transit.

If your time is short, the strongest advice is to pick one axis — north, or desert — and do it well. Our Algeria itineraries set out 7, 10 and 14-day routes, and the transport guide explains the distances behind them.
