Can I get an Algeria visa on arrival?
Generally no. Almost all visitors must obtain an Algerian visa before travelling, at a consulate. The one recognised exception is an organised tour that includes the Sahara: a licensed Algerian operator files your details in advance and the visa is issued on arrival at Algiers airport. Confirm current rules with your nearest consulate before booking flights.
Algeria is not a visa-on-arrival country in the way Egypt or Jordan are. For virtually every nationality the tourist visa is issued before departure, by an Algerian embassy or consulate, and airlines will refuse boarding without it.
The exception that causes most of the confusion is the organised tour that includes the Sahara — the Tassili n’Ajjer around Djanet, the Hoggar, Timimoun or the M’Zab. Travellers on such a programme fly into Algiers as normal and the visa is issued on arrival at Algiers airport, because a licensed Algerian agency has filed their details and permits in advance. It does not matter which airport you land at; what qualifies you is the Sahara trip in the programme. This is not something an independent traveller can arrange at the airport; it exists because the agency is accountable for the group.
Two practical consequences. First, if the deep Sahara is your reason for coming, ask your operator early whether your nationality and entry point qualify — it can save several weeks. Second, if you are visiting the north, the coast or the Roman cities, plan on a normal consular application and start it well ahead of your flights.
Requirements change without much notice, so treat any blog post, including this one, as orientation rather than authority: confirm with your nearest Algerian consulate. Our full Algeria visa guide walks through documents, timelines and the reasons applications get refused, and we provide the invitation and booking paperwork consulates ask for.
