Do I need vaccinations for Algeria?

Quick answer

No vaccinations are routinely mandatory for travellers arriving from Europe or North America, though a yellow fever certificate can be required if you arrive from an endemic country. Standard travel advice is to be up to date on routine vaccines. Check with a travel clinic well before you go.

For most travellers arriving from Europe, North America or the Gulf, Algeria has no mandatory vaccination requirement. You will not be asked for a vaccination certificate at the border in the ordinary case.

The exception is yellow fever: as in much of North Africa, proof of vaccination can be required of travellers arriving from, or having recently transited, a country where yellow fever is endemic. If your route passes through sub-Saharan Africa or parts of South America, check this specifically.

Beyond that, health advice is the standard travel-clinic picture rather than anything Algeria-specific: be up to date on your routine vaccinations, and discuss the usual travel additions with a clinician who can weigh them against your itinerary and medical history. Malaria is not a general concern in the areas visitors travel.

Two Algeria-specific practicalities matter more than any injection. First, bring your own medication — prescription drugs in original packaging with a copy of the prescription, plus a basic kit including rehydration salts, since pharmacies are good but brand names differ and stock varies. Second, do not drink the tap water: see can you drink the tap water in Algeria?.

In the Sahara the real health risks are environmental — heat, dehydration and sun — which is why desert programmes carry water by the vehicle-load. See is the Algerian Sahara safe?.

This page is orientation, not medical advice. See a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure.
