How do you get around in Algeria?
Algeria is large, so long distances — especially to the Sahara — are usually covered by domestic flights, while regional travel is by road. On our tours you travel by private vehicle with a driver-guide throughout, so you don't need to navigate public transport yourself.
Algeria is the largest country in Africa, so how you move depends on distance:
- Long distances (north to the deep Sahara — Djanet, Tamanrasset) are most practical by domestic flight; the road distances are huge.
- Between regions and cities in the north, travel is by road. Intercity coaches and trains exist, but a private vehicle is the most flexible.
- Within cities, taxis are easy; Algiers also has a metro, tram and funiculars.
On an Algeria Compass tour you travel by private vehicle with a licensed driver-guide for the whole itinerary, with internal flights arranged where they make sense — so you never have to work out timetables or routes yourself. For more detail, see our Algeria transportation guide, or tell us your plans and we’ll handle the logistics.
